Dave & Phyllis Douglas

Dave and Phyllis joined Barakel’s staff in 1989. Dave serves as director of short-term staffing. Phyllis is our women’s work coordinator and director of housekeeping. Their children are Lydia and Daniel. Calvary Baptist Church of Delaware, Ohio, is their home church.

(March 2010)

So why did Dave pop two buttons in one week?

No joke, two pairs of pants in one week! They must have shrunk! Phyllis used too hot of water in the laundry… or it might have something to do with hanging out with college students at Krispy Kreme, pizza places, and ice cream parlors. We’ve traveled 4863 miles in the past few months attending eleven recruiting events and reunions, all this attempting to connect with former staff and potential summer staff.

How are the staffing numbers for the summer season?

Around 50 college-age people have applied to work, yet we still need more workers especially in the areas of nursing, lifeguarding and counseling. Pray with us for nurses who can help extend some T.L.C. to campers and for young adults who love Christ and long to share Him with kids.

How do you get hundreds to volunteer year after year?

Recently, a group of camp leaders (who pay their workers) asked us this question. Many of our adult staff were junior campers at Barakel. We’ve watched over the years as junior campers become teen campers. Then they work in our teen work program, and join our college-age staff. Some even become Seasonal Staff and adult Part-Time Staff. In a few cases those junior campers even become our own Resident Staff. Give junior campers a glorious picture of God and His gospel, and often they become sold on the ministry and return as adult workers

Will we get a family break before the busy summer season?

We’ll travel during spring break April 2 – 11, and plan to see family in Ohio and Indiana. We look forward to attending Easter Sunday service with our family and friends in Blanchester, Ohio. It’s a much needed break as our family has been busy with much more than just camp activities.

Besides camp what keeps the Douglas family busy?

Lydia has spent countless hours applying for scholarships with the hopes of enrolling in Cedarville’s nursing program. She will graduate on May 28. She also has a lead role in the musical “Honk” which will be performed several times at the end of March.

Daniel has inherited his mom’s interest in table tennis. He’s competed in a couple of tournaments and even brought home a trophy. He’ll begin driver’s education at the end of March. Pedestrians beware!

Dave & Phyllis enjoy daily walks together. They help with a local youth group and help lead the small groups. Dave is just beginning to get back to his cycling after the long winter. Based on his button problem he needs to pedal off a few pounds before the summer season. Phyllis attends two weekly Bible studies and enjoys reading when her schedule allows.

What prayer items does the Douglas family have?

·     for Dave as he makes decisions regarding the summer staff selection. He also has several summer Bible lessons to prepare.

·     for Phyllis as she wears multiple hats of camp responsibility and manages a home of growing teens.

·     for maturity and growth in Daniel. He plans to work in camp for a week this summer.  Pray for safety as he begins to drive.

·    for Lydia as she serves here on summer staff as a lifeguard and then hopes to attend Cedarville in the fall. Pray she gets many BIG scholarships. Pray as she leads a weekly high school girls’ Bible study at school.

·     for our vehicle need. Our second car just died leaving us to creatively learn to live with one car. We need wisdom as we begin the search for another vehicle.
